Hopi ear candling explained
Written by India Hudson, founder & therapistHopi ear candling – also known as Thermal Auricular Therapy, or ear coning – is one of the more unusual treatments on our menu. It's also one of the most calming. Here's what it's all about.

What is ear candling?
The treatment uses long, hollow candles made from cotton and beeswax, often with natural herbs and essential oils. While you lie on your side, one end of the candle is placed gently at the entrance of your ear and the other is lit. The candle acts like a chimney, creating a gentle, warming air flow.
What does it feel like?
You'll feel a soft warmth and hear a gentle crackling, a bit like a fire in the next room. Most people find it incredibly soothing – some drift off. Your therapist stays with you throughout, holding the candle steady. At Hudson & Wood, we usually finish with a gentle face and scalp massage.
Why do people book it?
Most people book ear candling to relax and let go of stress. It's a calming, holistic treatment rather than a medical one – we don't offer it as a way to remove ear wax or treat ear problems.
Who shouldn't have it?
It isn't suitable if you have grommets, a perforated eardrum, an ear infection, or have recently had ear surgery. If you have ear pain, hearing problems or a build-up of wax, please see your GP or pharmacist first.
