Massage during pregnancy: what to expect at each stage

Written by India Hudson, founder & therapist

Pregnancy brings so much to look forward to – and, often, an aching back, tired legs and nights where it's hard to get comfy. A maternity massage is designed to help you relax as your body changes. Here's what to expect.

When can I have a pregnancy massage?

If you've had any complications, please check with your midwife or GP first. Always let us know you're pregnant when you book, whatever treatment you choose.

02

How is it different from a normal massage?

Instead of lying on your front, you'll be supported on your side, with cushions placed exactly where you need them on a soothing, heated couch. Your therapist uses gentle strokes, focusing on your back, shoulders, neck, legs and feet, and avoids anything that isn't suitable during pregnancy. Some essential oils aren't recommended in pregnancy, so we keep things simple.

03

Second trimester

Many mums-to-be find this is when massage is most welcome – energy is often returning, but backs and hips are starting to feel the strain. Side-lying positions keep you and your baby comfortable.

04

Third trimester

As your bump grows, comfort becomes everything. We'll take extra care getting you settled, change position whenever you need, and focus on easing tired legs, swollen feet and achy lower backs. Allow a little extra time to get on and off the couch – there's no rush.

After your baby arrives

Once you feel ready – usually after your six-week check – you're welcome to book any of our massages for some well-earned time to yourself.
