What does reflexology feel like? A first-timer's guide

Written by India Hudson, founder & therapist

Reflexology is one of the treatments Hudson & Wood began with, and it's still one of our favourites. But if you've never had it, it can be hard to imagine. Here's what to expect.

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is a complementary therapy based on the idea that points on the feet relate to different areas of the body. A reflexologist applies gentle, focused pressure to these points, working methodically across both feet. Most people book it simply to relax and rebalance.

02

What does it actually feel like?

Think of a firm, soothing foot massage with moments of more focused pressure. Some points feel lovely; the occasional one might feel a little tender, and your reflexologist will adjust. And no – it doesn't tickle! The pressure is too steady for that.

Most people feel very relaxed, and it's not unusual to drift off. Afterwards, many say they feel calm, a little sleepy and lighter.

What happens in a session?

  1. A short chat about your health and how you've been feeling.
  2. Shoes and socks off, and you settle back on a warm couch with a blanket.
  3. Your feet are gently warmed and relaxed.
  4. Your reflexologist works through the reflex points on both feet.
  5. A few quiet moments and a glass of water before you head off.
04

Do I need to undress?

No – just your shoes and socks. Wear trousers you can roll up to the knee.

Tips for your first session

  • Avoid a heavy meal or alcohol just before.
  • Tell us about any health conditions, or if you're pregnant.
  • Drink plenty of water afterwards and give yourself a gentle evening.
