How to prepare for your first Brazilian or Hollywood wax

Written by India Hudson, founder & therapist

Booking your first intimate wax can feel like a big step. The good news? A little preparation makes it much more comfortable – and your therapist has seen it all before. Here's everything you need to know.

Brazilian or Hollywood?

A Brazilian removes everything except a neat landing strip at the front. A Hollywood removes everything (yes, everything!). If you're not sure, start with a bikini wax and work up.

02

The week before

  • Let it grow. Hair needs to be about one centimetre long – roughly two to three weeks after shaving.
  • Trim if it's longer. Trim to approximately one centimetre. This makes waxing much more comfortable.
  • Exfoliate gently a day or two before, to help the wax grip the hair rather than the skin.
  • Avoid sunbeds and sunburn on the area.
03

On the day

  • Skip moisturiser and oils on the area.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
  • Try to avoid booking just before or during your period, when skin can be more sensitive – though you can still be waxed if you use a tampon or cup.
  • Some people find taking their usual mild pain relief half an hour before helps.

What happens

You'll undress from the waist down in private and be given cover. Your therapist cleanses the area, trims any longer hairs, then applies hot wax in small sections. Hot wax grips the hair, not the skin, so it's much gentler on delicate areas. Each section is removed quickly, any strays are tweezed and a calming lotion goes on. It's quicker than you think.

05

Afterwards

For 24 hours, avoid hot baths, saunas, swimming, the gym, sex, tight clothing and perfumed products. From day two or three, exfoliate gently a couple of times a week to keep ingrown hairs away.

06

Does it get easier?

Yes! The first wax is usually the most uncomfortable. With regular waxing every four to six weeks, regrowth tends to come back finer and sparser.
