What to expect from Reiki in Sheffield

Reiki is a Japanese relaxation technique based on the idea of supporting the body's natural sense of balance. Your practitioner places their hands lightly on, or just above, a series of positions on your body – usually from the head down to the feet – staying in each one for a few minutes. There's no massage, no pressure and no need to talk unless you'd like to.

People describe it in different ways. Some feel warmth or tingling, some feel heavy and sleepy, and some simply notice that their mind has gone quiet for the first time in weeks. You don't need to believe in anything in particular to enjoy it – many clients book it simply because it's one of the most peaceful hours they can find.

What happens during your Reiki session

  1. A short chat. How you're feeling, anything on your mind, and whether you'd prefer hands-on or hands-off Reiki.
  2. Get comfy. Shoes off, then lie down fully clothed on a warm couch with a soft blanket and pillow.
  3. Reiki. Your practitioner works through gentle hand positions, from your head to your feet, in a calm, quiet room.
  4. Come round. A few minutes to come back to the room in your own time.
  5. Water and a few words. A glass of water, and a chance to share how it felt if you'd like to.

Is it right for you?

Reiki is lovely if you're feeling stressed, overwhelmed, tired or a little out of sorts, or if you simply want to slow down. It's also a good choice if you don't want to undress or be massaged. Reiki is a complementary therapy for relaxation and wellbeing, and is used alongside – never instead of – medical care. If you'd like something hands-on and equally calming, try reflexology or an Indian head massage.

Before and after your visit

Wear something comfortable and avoid a heavy meal or alcohol just before. Afterwards, drink plenty of water and, if you can, give yourself a quiet evening. Some people feel energised after Reiki; others feel very relaxed and sleepy – both are completely normal.
