How our deep tissue massage in Sheffield works
Luxury (85 mins) – our longest massage, with time to work through every area properly and plenty of time to completely unwind. The perfect treat when an hour just isn't enough.
Deep tissue massage works into the deeper layers of muscle, where long-standing tightness tends to hide. Your therapist uses slower, firmer strokes and focused pressure on trigger points – those tight, tender spots that can make your shoulders feel like they're up round your ears. As the muscle softens, many clients find they can move more freely and that nagging stiffness finally eases.
It's ideal if you sit at a desk all day, carry little ones about, spend hours driving, or love a run up through Endcliffe Park and back. It's still relaxing – just with a bit more purpose.
What happens during your treatment
- Welcome and consultation. Tell us where it hurts, what you do day to day and how firm you like it. We'll check for anything that means we should adapt the treatment.
- Settling in. You'll undress to your underwear and lie on a warm couch under soft towels.
- Warming up. Your therapist starts with gentler strokes to warm the muscles, so the deeper work feels comfortable.
- Deeper work. Slow, firm pressure and trigger-point therapy on the areas that need it most. It should feel like a 'good ache' – never sharp pain. Just say if you'd like it lighter.
- Come round and aftercare. Take your time getting up. We'll bring you water and share a few simple stretches or tips to help it last.
Is it right for you?
Deep tissue suits you if you have specific knots or stiffness you'd like worked on. Choose full body for all-over tension, upper body for back, neck, shoulders and arms, or back for a focused session. If you'd rather simply drift off, our Swedish massage is gentler, and our back, neck and shoulder massage page explains the shorter options. Deep tissue isn't suitable during pregnancy – please book our maternity massage instead.
Before and after your visit
Let us know about any injuries, recent operations or medical conditions when you arrive. Avoid a heavy meal just before. Afterwards, drink plenty of water and go easy on the gym for the rest of the day. It's normal to feel a little tender for a day or so – a warm bath helps.
Why Hudson & Wood
Our qualified therapists take time to understand where your tension comes from, rather than following a set routine. We're a small independent salon, so you'll see a familiar face, and our quiet room on Sharrow Vale Road – a short hop from Ecclesall Road – is a calm spot to finally let your shoulders drop.
Pair it with
Finish with an Indian head massage for the neck and scalp, or try hot stone massage next time – the warmth helps tight muscles relax. See our pamper packages.
Good to know
Your questions, answered
Does deep tissue massage hurt?
+
It's firmer than a relaxing massage and you may feel some tenderness in tight spots, but it shouldn't be painful. Your therapist will check in with you throughout and adjust the pressure.
Will I be sore afterwards?
+
Some people feel a little tender for a day or two, a bit like after exercise. Drinking water, gentle stretching and a warm bath all help.
How often should I book?
+
For stubborn tension, two or three sessions a few weeks apart often works well, then once a month to keep on top of it. We'll suggest what suits you.
Can I have deep tissue just on my back and shoulders?
+
Yes – choose the back or upper body option. Both are lovely if most of your tension sits in your top half.
Is deep tissue the same as sports massage?
+
They're similar in pressure, but our deep tissue massage is designed for everyday aches and tension rather than sports injuries. If you're recovering from an injury, please check with your GP or physio first.
Where do I park?
+
There's paid street parking on Sharrow Vale Road with a free 20-minute ticket available from the machines – leave a few minutes to find a space.
