Swedish or deep tissue massage? How to choose

Written by India Hudson, founder & therapist

It's one of the questions we're asked most: 'Which massage should I book?' The two most popular choices are Swedish and deep tissue – and the right one depends on how you're feeling and what you'd like from your hour.

Swedish massage: for relaxation

Swedish massage uses long, flowing strokes, gentle kneading and soft circular movements. The pressure is light to medium, and the aim is to relax your whole body, boost circulation and ease general aches.

Book Swedish if you're stressed, run-down, struggling to switch off or new to massage.

02

Deep tissue massage: for knots and tension

Deep tissue massage uses slower, firmer pressure and trigger-point therapy to work into the deeper layers of muscle. It's more focused – your therapist will spend time on the areas that need it.

Book deep tissue if you have stubborn knots, stiffness from sitting at a desk, or tight muscles from running, cycling or carrying children about.

Still can't decide?

Try this: if your main goal is to feel better, choose Swedish. If it's to move better, choose deep tissue. And if you love warmth, a hot stone massage is a lovely middle ground.

Whichever you choose, your therapist can adjust the pressure as you go. Both are available as full body, upper body or back treatments. See all our massages in Sheffield.
