Why choose a Thai massage in Sheffield?

Thai massage is a traditional style of bodywork from Thailand. Rather than only long, gliding strokes, your therapist uses their palms, thumbs and forearms to apply steady, rhythmic pressure along the body, combined with gentle stretches that move your limbs through their natural range. It's sometimes called 'lazy person's yoga' – you get the lovely stretched-out feeling without having to do any of the work.

It's brilliant if you feel stiff, sit at a desk all day, are active and want to feel more supple, or simply like a massage with a bit more energy to it. Most people leave feeling both relaxed and refreshed.

Traditional Thai or Thai oil massage?

Traditional Thai massage Thai oil massage
What you wear Loose, comfortable clothes – you stay fully dressed Undressed to your underwear, covered with towels
Oil None Warm massage oil
Feel Firmer, more stretching, more energising Smoother and more flowing, with fewer stretches – more relaxing
Best for Stiffness, flexibility, a 'proper stretch' Tension relief with a softer, soothing finish

Not sure? Choose traditional if you'd like to feel looser and more supple, and oil if you'd like to unwind. You can tell us on the day if you change your mind.

What happens during your Thai massage

  1. Welcome and consultation. We'll ask about any injuries, stiffness or health conditions, which style you've chosen, and how firm you'd like the pressure.
  2. Get comfy. For traditional Thai, you'll stay in loose, comfortable clothes. For Thai oil massage, you'll undress to your underwear and lie on a warm couch under soft towels.
  3. Rhythmic pressure. Your therapist works along your back, legs, arms and shoulders with palm and thumb pressure – with warm oil if you've chosen the oil massage.
  4. Assisted stretches. Gentle stretches for your back, hips, legs and shoulders, always within a comfortable range. The traditional style includes more stretching; the oil massage blends a few stretches into flowing strokes.
  5. Come round. A few quiet moments, a glass of water and some simple stretches to try at home.
04

Back or full body?

Choose back, neck & shoulders (25 mins) for a focused treatment where tension builds most, or full body (55 mins) for the complete experience, including stretches for your hips and legs. If you'd like firm, hands-on work without stretching, try deep tissue massage; for pure relaxation, our Swedish massage is gentler.

05

Is it right for you?

Thai massage suits most people who'd like to feel looser and more flexible. Because it includes stretching and firm pressure, it isn't suitable during pregnancy (please choose one of our maternity massage treatments), or if you have a recent injury, operation, osteoporosis, or a joint or back problem. If you have high blood pressure or a heart condition, please check with your GP first. Choosing the oil massage? Let us know about any skin sensitivities or allergies.

06

Before and after your visit

For traditional Thai, wear loose, comfortable clothing you can move in – leggings or joggers and a T-shirt are perfect. For Thai oil massage, just wear something comfortable to travel home in. Avoid a heavy meal for an hour or two beforehand. Afterwards, drink plenty of water and keep moving gently. You may feel a little tender in tight areas for a day, much like after a good stretch session.

Good to know

Your questions, answered

What is Thai massage?

+

A traditional massage from Thailand that uses rhythmic pressure and gentle assisted stretches. We offer it the traditional way, fully clothed, or as a Thai oil massage.

Do I keep my clothes on?

+

For a traditional Thai massage, yes – wear loose, comfortable clothes. For a Thai oil massage, you'll undress to your underwear and be covered with towels throughout, with only the area being massaged uncovered.

Which style should I choose?

+

Traditional Thai is firmer, with more stretching – great for stiffness and flexibility. Thai oil massage is smoother and more relaxing. If you can't decide, we'll help you choose on the day.

Does Thai massage hurt?

+

It's firm and you'll feel a good stretch, but it shouldn't hurt. Your therapist will check in with you throughout and adjust the pressure and stretches.

How long does a Thai massage take?

+

25 minutes for back, neck and shoulders, or 55 minutes for a full body treatment – in either style.

Can I have Thai massage when I'm pregnant?

+

No – please choose one of our Peaceful Pregnancy treatments, which are designed for mums-to-be.
